Home of Copeland Furniture
History of Copeland Furniture:
In the early 1970's the family owned and operated company located in the small town of Bradford, Vermont began their business by building and making cider presses for home and small scale orchard use. From there Copeland would begin designing and building butcher block kitchen furniture and adirondack style porch furniture as well as many other types of furnishings. They would gradually move into building and designing home furnishings in the way of bedroom and dining room furnishings. What started out as a one man operation would grow to employ 80 skilled woodworking employees. Copeland Furniture is American made which means it has a high commitment to quality and design and only the finest materials from FSC certified wood and sawmills. Copeland Furniture has a loyal New England tradition to offering quality craftsmanship and strive to make the best furniture possible.

Sustainably Harvested Hardwoods: American Northern Forest
The Northern Forest in American is increasing in standing biomass making it one of the healthiest in the world. With this increase in size it is able to absord more carbon dioxide each year. The forests in Vermont are no exception now covering 85% of the state. Lumber used is from within 500 miles of the factory. Less fossil fuels and carbon dioxide is emitted by sourcing lumber and raw materials within this radius of the factory.
(FSC) Forest Stewardship Council certified
Copeland works in cooperation with the Smartwood program of the Rainforest Alliance. It requires Copeland to work with suppliers who can certify that the wood purchased comes from forests that are not threatened, have no genetically modified trees and do not have a high conservation significance. SmartWood audits Copeland's records annually. FSC-certified woodlots and FSC-certified sawmills are the preferred sources of wood for Copeland products.
Copeland Factory in Bradford, VT USA
Copeland Furniture beds feature a wood slat support system. This system consists of a three section center support rail, each with support leg and slats. The slats used are 2" wide with 2" spacing. This support system will accommodate most mattresses. Slats are connected together using polypropylene banding to ensure proper spacing. Select slats with counter sunk holes in the wood are secured to the bed using wood screws through the holes that secure the slats to the ledge built into the siderail. This ensure proper spacing and alignment for the bed's foundation.
Available Bed Slat Woods

Available American Hardwoods - Nature's "Greenest" Choice
Don't be afraid to choose solid hardwood furniture. American hardwoods are abundant and sustainable and for centuries have been providing beauty, warmth and functional value for floors, furniture, mouldings, millwork and cabinetry. Wood products are carbon neutral; no other material can compare!
Nearly twice as much hardwood grows each year as is harvested and in the past 50 years, the volume of hardwood in American forests has nearly doubled. Foresters work with the timeline that Nature dictates: sustained supply and ongoing replenishment are the result.

Maple is a hard and heavy wood that offers good strength especially in its high resistance to abrasion and wear. Has good steam bending properties. Cut maple dries slowly with a high amount of shrinkage which leads to smaller yields of lumber per tree than the average tree. Pre-boring is recommended when nailing and screwing maple wood. Machines and turns well and can be stained. Maple has a close, fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained. Maple is used in furniture, flooring, ballroom and gymnasium floors, stairs, cabinets and doors.
Cherry is a hard and heavy wood that is easy to machine, nail and glue when sanded and stained. The natural wood color of cherry varies from a rich red to reddish brown color depending on the the age of the tree and exposure to light. It is a lower yielding wood as it dries farily quickly with moderately high shrinkage. However it is a dimensionally stable wood after kiln-drying which makes it an excellent choice when it comes to building material. Cherry wood offers good bending properties and has a low stiffness with good strength and shock resistance. Cherry is used in furniture, cabinet making, millwork, musical instruments, flooring and boat interiors.
Walnut is a tough hardwood with medium density. It offers good steam bending properties. Walnut works easily with the use of hand tools and machine tools. It nails, screws and glues well as well as holding paints and stains very well for an exceptional finish. This wood dries slowly and requires greater care and attention during kiln-drying to avoid degradation in lumber quality but will offer very good dimensional stability. This makes walnut a premium choice hardwood. Walnut is used in furniture, cabinets, millwork, gun stocks and flooring.
