Shopping Tips For Finding Your Platform Bed:

Choosing the type of platform bed you want.

Are you in the market for a new platform bed? Sometimes when we think of a platform bed what may come to mind is a bed with a solid top surface and maybe drawers or storage units built in beneath it. This is definitely one type of platform bed frame but there are many others to choose from. Here are some suggestions and tips when shopping for a platform bed that may help you find what you're looking for.

Wood Platform Bed Frames -
These frames are going to be offered in a wide array of styles and designs. These beds will feature a headboard, footboard and rails. The foundation will usually be either a slat support system or a metal frame system with slats or solid panels. The richness and beauty of real wood beds can be seen in the natural wood grain found in these products. Wood platform beds are great for any bedroom and blend in well with any décor.

Metal Platform Bed Frames -
Metal frames will often be modern or contemporary in design. Steel is easier to bend into more unique shapes and you'll see some traditional styles as well. Metal platform bed frames will consist of a headboard, footboard and rails. Foundations for these beds will be steel crossbars and will often include masonite or solid paneling that fits over the cross supports. Metal platform beds often have a more industrial look to them which will fit in great with a modern bedroom décor.

Storage Platform Bed Frames -
These platform bed frames feature built in storage beneath the primary platform of the bed. This is actually a great use of space since platform beds are by design made for just a mattress. There's all that extra space beneath the bed that can be used. Why not use it for storage? Drawers are usually featured on one side for twin beds. For full beds, queen beds and king beds you'll find drawers on both sides of the bed. The platform of the bed may consist of a steel frame with slats or it may also be solid wood panels. Storage platform beds are going to provide you with great space saving features for any room by handling more bedding, clothes and other belongings.

Low Profile Platform Bed Frames -

When you're looking for a platform bed you may also be interested in a bed that has a lower profile. These are typically beds that will have a platform closer to the ground and the construction of the beds appearance is such that taller footboards or headboards are omitted from the design. You'll find a low footboard often below the level of the mattress and headboards that are modest in height. The reasons you may want a low profile bed is to create more visual space in your room and a bed with lower features will help.

Finding the size of platform bed that's right for you.

The frames listed above are the primary sub-categories you'll find in the way of platform beds. Once you've narrowed down the type of frame you're looking for the next thing to decide on it what size of bed you're shopping for. Believe it or not there may be some sizes you might not be aware of. Here is a listing of the standard and special sizes available in platform bed frames.

Twin Size - (39 in. x 75 in.)
Probably the most common size for small rooms or rooms where multiple beds are needed. Twin size beds take up the least amount of space and are great for saving space in small rooms. Twin beds are best for one person. Small children and young teenagers are best suited for using twin size platform beds. However twin beds also work great in spare rooms for the occasional guest. Adults may find twin beds typically don't offer the length they need and there is an alternative bed size for those individuals.

Twin Extra Long Size or XL Twin - (39 in. x 80 in.)
Here is the size for adults who need a smaller width bed but something longer. Twin extra long beds take an existing twin size bed and make it long. Now it's the same length as a queen size bed. These platform beds are great for small spaces but work well for young adults or adults who need an everyday bed and need the extra length. The perfect size to fit that taller guest or for use as an everyday bed.

Full Size - (54 in. x 75 in.)
This size of bed is slightly smaller both in length and width than a queen size bed. It can sleep two people but is just slightly wider than a standard twin size bed. Full size beds work well in small rooms for teenagers, young adults or can also serve as a smaller guest bed if company is staying with you. A great space saver while offering a size that almost anyone can use. However, if you think you need more length, but like the width of a full size bed there is another size available. Also referred to as a double size bed..

Full Extra Long Size of XL Full - (54 in. x 80 in.)
Here is an extra long version of a standard full size bed. These extra long full size beds give you the same smaller width of a regular full size bed but provide the added length that a queen bed would offer. These beds should accommodate most guests and still keep the smaller size of a full mattress if your space is limited in the room. Also referred to as a double extra long size bed.

Queen Size - (60 in. x 80 in.)
The number one selling size in North America. Queen size beds are considered the perfect size for adults as it can comfortably sleep two people and considering the mattress measures six feet and eight inches long it will accommodate taller individuals as well. Queen size platform beds are typically purchased for master bedrooms or larger sized bedrooms able to accommodate both the length and width of the mattress. You'll find most beds offered in this size so you won't be limited in style or look since most manufacturers recognize that the majority of shoppers are interested in getting a queen size.

King Size or Eastern King Size - (76 in. x 80 in.)
Right behind queen size beds in popularity are king size beds. King size beds offer the maximum width for comfort in standard size beds. They easily sleep two adults and provide ample amounts of sleeping space for everyone. King beds are reserved for master bedrooms or rooms large enough that can accommodate the length and width of these mattresses. Typically used as the primary mattress for adults. Some guest rooms if large enough can also make use of these beds for family or friends staying with you.

California King Size - (72 in. x 85 in.)
For those who want a bed that is width wise somewhere between a king and queen bed but want it longer. California king beds are the way to go for a platform bed. They are the longest bed still somewhat considered a standard size and offer length over 7 feet long. Taller individuals will welcome the extra room these beds offer and the greater length they provide. California king actually originated from the waterbed industry and has carried over into conventional bedrooms.

Making a choice for a style of platform bed.

This is really up to the individual. Some things to consider though would include are you looking to go with a more traditional look or do you want a style of bed that is more modern? Traditional platform bed styles will feature anything from a French provincial look to perhaps an early American mission or arts and crafts design. Modern designs will have clean lines featuring more minimal features in keeping with their look.

One thing in choosing a style of platform bed that is often overlooked is the thickness of the mattress you'll be using. Most average mattresses are around 10" thick. Of course there are many thicker than this and of course thinner as well. The important thing to figure out is the height of the slats or foundation of the platform bed and then the height of the headboard itself. Figure out the measurement between these two dimensions and you can figure out if your mattress will fit just right or if it's going to be too tall or too short for the bed. You obviously don't want to cover up the headboard with your mattress so knowing this will definitely give you more peace of mind when selecting your style of bed.

Shopping for a platform bed can be both fun and rewarding as we want our bedrooms to be comfortable and visually an extension of our tastes and who we are. When you're ready to start shopping consider several things. Choosing the type of platform bed. Do you want a wood bed or metal bed? Are you in the market for a platform bed that offers built in storage? Some other things to consider as well are what size of bed do you want. Besides standard sizes like twin, full, queen and king you can also get extra long sizes of beds and a larger California king bed size when deciding how large your bed needs to be for your space. Finally, consider the style of the platform bed in relation to the mattress you have or will be purchasing. Some beds offer taller headboards to accommodate most mattresses while some have very low profile headboards. Hope you'll keep this in mind when selecting your new platform bed.
