The Midwest Heirloom
Furnishings Story:
Located in central Wisconsin, Midwest Heirloom Furnishings have been producing
quality bench made beds and casegoods since 1981. The company was founded
by a skilled Mennonite carpenter who saw a need to build simple well made
domestic furniture and travelled to many local furniture stores seeing if
there was anything he could build for them. By 1992 the company had 8 Mennonite
and Amish craftsmen and were supplying many local Wisconsin furniture stores
with these quality beds and case pieces. The founder however received a
calling to start a new congregation in another area and would be unable
to dedicate the time necessary to start the church and run the business.
So in May of 1992 he sold the business to a father and son, also skilled
wood craftsmen who continued expanding the business with the same quality
of construction and more choices in bedroom and dining room furniture. The
company has received a Certificate of Commendation from the office of the
Governor for manufacturing excellence and has also been nominated Wisconsin
manufacturer of the year.
Each piece of furniture is still bench built by one person. These individually
assembled pieces of furniture come with a high commitment to quality and
value. Proudly made in the USA, from a wide variety of solid wood choices.
Midwest Heirloom Furnishings manufacturers each piece of furniture to order
in your wood and finish selection giving you more control over the look
of your furniture. We are an authorized distributer for Midwest Heirloom
Furnishings and these products ship from our warehouse in Illinois direct
to you.

Woods & Finishes
Oak
Wood Oak
is a hard and heavy wood with medium bending strength and has a high crushing
strength. A good wood for steam bending. High resistance to wear. Oak represents
almost 37% of total American hardwoods commercially used. Cut oak dries
very slowly. Oak does machine quite well and can be nailed and screwed although
because of its hardness may require pre-boring due to the hardness of the
wood. Can be stained in a wide range of finishes. The wood is primarily
straight grained with a coarse texture. Oak is used in furniture, flooring,
millwork, paneling and cabinets. (Click below for larger finish images)

Birch
Wood Birch
is a heavy, hard wood and is very strong. Offers very good bending properties.
Wood grain is straight grained and may often have a curly or wavy pattern.
Birch wood works easily and takes glue, nails and screws well with pre-boring
due to the hardness of the wood. Cut birch dries very slowly. Has moderately
high shrinkage during the drying process. This causes a loss in overall
wood yield which makes birch a more premium wood. Straight
grained wood with a curly or wavy pattern. Used in furniture, millwork,
turnings and toys.(Click

Cherry
Wood Cherry
wood has
medium strength and good bending properties. A very good wood that offers
very good shock resistance and strength. It is easy to machine and nails
and glues quite well when sanded and stained. Produces an excellent smooth
finish. Cut cherry dries quickly with moderately high shrinkage. Because
of the loss in yield during the drying of cherry wood it is considered a
more premium wood. Very
stable wood after kiln-drying. Fine wood grain, smooth satin
texture. May contain natural brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. Cherry
wood is readily available.
Used in fine furniture, boat interiors, carvings and musical instruments.

Hickory
Wood Hickory is the heaviest of American hardwoods. Can be difficult to machine
and require much work when using hand tools so additional care is required.
Holds nails and screws well but pre-boring is often required. Can be sanded
to a good finish. Grain pattern welcomes a full range of medium to dark
images. Cut hickory can be difficult to dry and often has high shrinkage
resulting in a low yield making it a premium wood. Well known for its strength
and excellent stem bending properties. Very tough wood. Used in tool handles,
furniture, flooring, sporting goods, wooden ladders and paneling. (Click

Midwest
Furnishings goes to great lengths to make sure every piece of furniture
conforms to the highest in quality standards. All lumber that comes into
the facility is tested for moisture content. The reason this is done is
to make sure that there is no warping (because the wood is very wet) and
no cracking (because the wood is very dry.) Midwest uses the highest grades
of lumber and all wood is graded for color to assure that each piece of
furniture is consistent in grain and color. No particle board is used in
these products. If a piece requires materials other than solid lumber, Midwest
will use engineered lumber as required. Referred to as medium density fiberboard
this wood is used on the sides of larger casegoods. It is flat, smooth,
free of knots, resistant to warping and is uniform in appearance. Midwest
uses many age old techniques in the comnstruction of their furniture. English
dovetail construction is featured not only in the front of every drawer
but also in the back as well. All four corners of drawers are dovetailed
which is not found in most furniture. Popular Euro-Glide systems are used
with all casegoods which ensure proper alignment and ease of operation.
All pieces are finishes using a ten step catalyzed lacquer finish which
is the strongest finish available. Resistant to heat, water and UV light.
It is also scratch resistant and is resistant even to finger nail polish
remover. After finishing all products are inspected for quality and are
ready for delivery to you.
Note: Please keep in
mind that natural materials will vary from piece to piece, and actual materials
may vary slightly from what is represented. The stain colors may also vary
slightly on each piece of furniture. The samples above represent the color
finishes as accurately as possible. Colors shown above are for reference
only.
About
Monterey Casegoods:
Solid wood construction is featured in the framing, wood tops and drawer
faces of every casegood unit. English dovetaildrawer
box construction is featured in every drawer in the Oak Town collection.
Featured both in the front and back of the drawer this sliding dovetail
allows the two sides to slide together easily but creates a joint that is
very tight and offers great resistance. This method requires no mechanical
fasteners. An Old World technique in cabinet construction that pre-dates
written history. The evolution of dovetail construction can be distinguished
from the various periods of furniture throughout the centuries. Casegood
