Bamboo Beds & Furniture

Mission Bamboo Bed with Bamboo Nightstand in Light Finish
Bamboo beds and bamboo furniture represent a growing trend in eco-friendly furniture. Ecologically friendly bamboo is becoming a very popular type of material in furniture not only because of it's green culture in being a responsibly harvested resource but also in it's rich exotic features which make it unique compared to many of the woods used today in furniture. A seventy foot bamboo plant can be harvested after 5 years and replaced in less than three months limiting the impact on our enviornment. Ecologists promote bamboo as a logical renewable source that also serves the purpose of restoring soil, preventing erosion and producing 30 percent more oxygen than a hardwood forest of comparable size.

Ramblin Wood one of our major platform beds suppliers took it upon themselves as a goal to find alternative wood resources to offer customers looking for products from sustainable and regenerative sources that are eco-friendly. Their travels took them all the way to China where they found their source in Shanghai in the form of moso bamboo boards. Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) is a bamboo plant species that covers about 7.413 million acres (2% of the total forest area) throughout China.
"Mao Zhu" is the Chinese name for moso bamboo which means "hairy bamboo".

Benefits of Using Bamboo in Beds:

Bamboo is among the fastest growing plants in the world although the Chinese people do not consider it to be a plant or grass. Instead they refer to bamboo as "Nan Zhu" in Chinese it roughly translates to mean "very valuable hardwood" or timber in this case. In fact due to shortages in timber, efforts are being made throughout Asia to substitute moso bamboo for conventional lumber. Many traditonal woods like oak and maple require 45-50 years of growth before harvesting. Moso bamboo is harvested at about 5 years at which time seedlings can be re-planted shortly thereafter to replenish what has been harvested.

Bamboo has become a popular material used in flooring, beds, handles, carrying poles and musical instruments as just a few examples of the many items constructed from this "green" building material. Bamboo is an especially strong dense fiber as it has a greater shear strength than structural woods and is harder than oak and expands less. There is a relative scarcity of timber bamboo in the United States and unfortunately few manufacturers domestically work with this building material. It's exotic and natural beauty provide a unique look both in furniture, beds and many other products which is why green builders prefer bamboo over others. These are just some of the reasons bamboo beds are becoming so popular.

Besides providing materials for construction in beds & furniture as well as oxygen for our environment moso bamboo also provides food to China and other Asian countries in the way of shoots. During the months of March through May people can enjoy eating what are referred to as spring bamboo shoots or chun sun. Bamboo shoots resemble a cone shape and are cultivated and harvested as soon as the tips appear above the ground. Spring shoots are chunky and pale in appearance. Winter bamboo shoots are also enjoyed and are smaller with a longer shape. Bamboo springs are peeled and cooked before eating. People who eat bamboo springs would describe it as dense, slightly chewy and firm.

Bamboo Beds & Furniture:
Ramblin Wood imports their bamboo from a factory which makes them near Shanghai, China. Specifically they make moso bamboo boards specifically for use in Ramblin Wood beds to our manufacturer's specifications. The bamboo boards are then shipped from China into the United States where they are brought to Albuquerque, NM where Ramblin Wood beds are made. From there the boards are sorted and cut to create bed post legs, cross pieces for headboards/footboards and side rails as well as nightstands, drawer faces, sides and nomad dresser and bookcase components.

These bamboo boards natural oil finishes are made available in light (similar in color to the maple) or caramel (light brown color comparable to the standard oak). No polyurethanes or other similar products are used on these natural bamboo beds. The easy to maintain oil finish can be cleaned and conditioned using natural products like a Murphy's Soap Oil that can be found in the cleaning supplies section of most grocery stores.

We're very excited to be able to offer Ramblin Wood products in an enviornmentally friendly material that helps to promote green living and a more planet friendly lifestyle.

Bamboo Used in Mattresses:
Bamboo is hardly something many people would consider is used in mattresses. However it is quite true and several mattress manufacturers use bamboo in their products for beds. Dormia is just one such manufacturer who offers several models of mattresses which use bamboo as an all natural covering for greater breathability. The fiber is 100% bio-degradable, absorbant and comfortable as well as being strong and durable. Bamboo fabric is noted for its soft feel and is suggested to have antibacterial properties. Bamboo mattress coverings may feature the "Pure Natural Bamboo" logo featuring the image of a bamboo culm or bamboo foliage.

Bamboo in Chinese Culture
In Chinese culture the bamboo is considered to be one of four favorite plants among the plum, orchid and chrysanthemum. Referred to as the "Four Men of Honor" by the Chinese as a metaphor. The characteristics of these four plants are highly admired by the Chinese people in that they want to emulate these characteristics in their daily lives. Plum blossom "braveness", orchid "leisure", bamboo "integrity" and chrysanthemum "modesty". The bamboo earned it's place of honor due to its deep roots in Chinese daily life and is believed to bring peace and harmony to everything around it. It also represents loneliness, elegance and modesty. This is shown and depicted in many cultural paintings and art.
