Bed Review - The Placitas
Placitas
Platform Bed Review:
The Placitas platform bed (Pronounced: Pla-see-tas) is
named after the small town of Placitas, NM located outside
of Albuquerque, NM in the Northern part of New Mexico.
The Placitas platform bed captures the Southwestern stylings
of the west by featuring a sunburst carving located both
in the headboard and footboard and painted in with a dusty
blue color. Of all the beds offered in this line of furniture
the Placitas platform bed is the best example of Southwestern
styling in a modern bed design. Solid wood platform bed.

Positives:
The Placitas platform bed incorporates "solid wood" into
its construction much like traditional Arts & Crafts furniture
did. No veneers or particle boards are used in this bed.
Many modern beds priced at or above this bed are using
veneers and particle board. Some of these may be have
been constructed well but most will show uneven seams
and edges where the veneer was not applied well. Because
the Placitas platform bed is solid wood you won't ever
have to worry about issues with veneer pulling off or
seeing exposed materials beneath. The Placitas bed is
offered in solid Red Oak by default. You also can upgrade
to Hard Rock Maple. Both of these woods are sourced domestically
and will offer excellent support and stability in the
construction of this bed. Bamboo is also available which
will provide an exotic look. The wood for this bed is
hand cut by a skilled craftsman who is able to create
each piece by hand. This hands on approach ensures quality
will be high much the same way traditional furniture from
the Arts & Crafts period was created.
The Placitas platform bed captures the spirit of the west
and its rich culture in the sunburst carvings that adorn
both the headboard and footboard crosspieces of this bed.
Done in a dusty blue finish this design is unique among
platform beds and is sure to add character to any bedroom
that has a Southwestern flavor. The Placitas platform
bed has a 28" high headboard. Each leg is 2" x 2". Because
the dimensions of the Placitas platform bed are kept smaller
than many other beds in the market you'll find that you
can fit it into most bedrooms. XL or extra long options
are also available for both Twin & Full size Placitas
beds.
Placitas platform beds are finished with what is called
a Danish oil finish. This finish is safe and non-toxic
and is a great alternative for a more natural look. The
Danish oil is hand applied and rubbed onto each piece.
The oil soaks into the wood penetrating it and giving
it a unique color which brings out the beautiful grains
in each piece of wood. Placitas beds are also available
unfinished so that you can stain your bed in the finish
of your choice. Many people are allergic or sensitive
to polyurethanes or other sealants used in today's furniture
and seem to have less problems with oil finishes. That's
why the Placitas platform bed is only made with a Danish
oil finish which doesn't have any sealants, polyurethanes
or other chemicals used in its finish.
Another positive for this bed are all the available options
you can select for it. These range from options called
Bigger Gap which are offered in 3", 7" and 10" increments.
These make the headboard taller to help accomodate thicker
mattresses. There are also options to upgrade the slats
from softwood spruce to hardwood poplar and to also double
up the slats to make the foundation more solid with less
gaps between each slat. There are also options to allow
the use of a mattress/boxspring or to increase the height
of the platform of the bed for more space beneath the
bed. You won't find other manufacturers offering options
like these and are unique to these beds. In fact many
of these options were created from customer needs and
often if you need something in an option that isn't offered
its quite possible that option can be created to fit your
need.
Negatives:
These beds are broken down in such a way that they can
be shipped UPS or FedEx. What this does for the end user
is to help keep the cost of shipping and packaging down
making the price $150-$200 less. It is in more parts though
and will require a little more assembly than similar higher
priced beds.
The Placitas platform bed is made to order as it is hand
made and the average wait for these beds is around 5 weeks
for delivery. The wait "is" worth it, but if you're in
a hurry then you might want to consider doing one of the
in-plant rush options (expedited or express) which will
help get your bed to the front of the line for quicker
production and faster delivery.

Platform
beds are becoming much more acceptable in even high-end
remodels and houses with plush interiors. The reason for
this is that a platform bed is so adaptable to just about
any situation. You have a wide range of styles and themes
to choose from whether you want a metal european type
platform bed model or a warm wood based bed. The combinations
are truly endless. You could order a metal
bed with very ornate metal work with a satin finish
and then dress up some of the furniture surrounding the
bed to be more reflective. You could purhase a high polished
metal plaform bed type finish with a more streamlined
look and then create some interest with certain fabrics
or window dressings. Also available are stylish import
platform beds which feature exotic designs and finishes.
These beds are available with matching dressers, chests,
mirrors and nightstands in a variety of models to choose

Another
direction to go in is to start your design with the platform
bed of your choice as the central design theme and then
work your way out to surrounding futon furniture or other
styles. You could then implement wall coverings or paint,
floor coverings or hardwood floors, stone or whatever,
and then finish up the room with window coverings and
complimentary lighting treatments. If you want the warmth
and interest of a wood platform bed you could order Oak
or Maple beds and then work it into just about any
type of decor...the limits are only with your imagination.
Bamboo
beds are also becoming quite popular and provide an
exotic look for many specific home decors. Extra
long beds are also available and will provide you
greater length to your bed while keeping the width the
same as a standard twin or full size bed.
